I've never cried of laughter so much with an anime...
And few have also made me cry just as much of sadness.
That anime makes you so happy just to stab you when you least expect it.
Truly a bittersweet, very silly and beautiful ode to life, kindness and comradery.

I’ve rewatched Violet Evergarden a lot, and it never fails to make me cry. Even with the character you only get one episode or a small section of the movie with, you feel for them. You hurt because they hurt. But even without these side characters, you have Violet whose story alone is enough to make grown men weep. And let’s not forget how fucking gorgeous the anime is. Every single character, scene, background, even the fights are masterfully done. I may be a stranger on the internet to whoever’s reading this, but trust me when I say, Violet Evergarden is worth the watch and the tears

One thing I particularly love is that it simultaneously breaks the viewer's heart and puts it back together again. Had it only been the sad moments, it would've just been bleak, but the reason the show is so successful at making the audience cry is that it's both very heartbreaking _and_ very heartwarming.

God, _Violet Evergarden_ wrecked me in a way that few other stories ever have. I would watch it in the morning before I got to work and the episode with the young daughter angry at her mother for writing letters instead of spending time with her caused me to ugly sob into my pillow and temporarily go blind from the tears. It's a fucking masterpiece, and I'll say the movie is a good watch too, though not quite as good as the show.

My home city of Seattle is also vaguely due for "the big one" so it's easy to imagine myself or the people I love in similar situations that makes it hit that much harder. No, the worst part is it's a common story among those of us that have played various campaigns of Cyberpunk (or Shadowrun if you want to go more fantasy in your dystopian future) before even 2077 got announced in 2012. If you think the digital adaptation wasn't powerful enough and thought that they couldn't possibly have that much phallic prosthetics in the tabletop, we have t-shirts if you survive initiation...

Can't believe there's no mention of Madoka Magica on here since it's second sequel movie has been announced. Both the og anime and the movie Rebellion will ruin your weekend, especially if you watch them back-to-back since they aren't very long. Don't let the sparkles fool you: this is very much not a kids show.
Technically not an anime, but anime inspired: RWBY has also broke me multiple times during it's 10 year run, more so than Madoka since it has aired more content and more consistently over the years. Don't believe people on the internet when they say it is bad; watch it for yourself and form your own opinion. It has gone through changes over the years, but the emotional weight has gotten deeper throughout each season in a way that I haven't seen from many shows, which is why it still means a lot to me 'til this day.

Now this is great timing. I just binged Your Lie in April in two days, I feel sad, depressed and I was just going to start looking for a new show to watch. :) I wonder if there's a show on the list that I haven't watched yet and your recommendation will make me continue my sad journey of sorrow and despair. xD

After I finished Anohana the first time, I legitimately just laid in bed sobbing for an hour. No media before or sinc has hit me that hard, and it's why it's my favorite

I already have a few of those titles in my plan to watch list (and I do want to watch them soon!) but I watched Vivy recently and was blown away by how good it was and how heart-wrenching & uncomfortably it was (not in a bad way). You get invested in the story, but you also cry when bad shit happens. Honestly, I loved the anime so much. I also watched Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 a decade ago I think, but now that I see this video, I really need to rewatch it. Violet Evergarden is my next watch. Thanks for this compilation that makes me want to cry my heart out.

Someday, someone will adapt the premise of the story which made me cry the hardest in the last few years. It was about an immortal who will always fully recover from death (and only the direct source of that death) and decides to keep it a secret, passing himself off as a “no power” superhero, his struggle to find a place where he fits, and how easy it was for him to hide that power when the people around him don’t realize how badly any of the things that happened to him both literally & metaphorically damaged him. It was also a pitch-black comedy which had me cackling right up until the last two chapters when his body was finally damaged so badly that it took him over a week to recover, everyone got very mad at him about going dark on them like that, and nearly 20yrs worth of built up trauma finally cracked (forcing them to face the truth of the situation, him to face the tragedy of his existence, and me to face the reality of all that happening to a boy so young that he normalized his own death long before he even became aware of superheroes.)
I had to stop every other page, because I literally could not see the words in front of my eyes.
It’s technically a fanfic, but the premise could be done independently. It’s on AO3 and is called “Banshee in a Well.” If, y’know, you feel like ruining your weekend with text instead of animation.

Surprised not to see Devilman Crybaby on here, choosing to watch it totally blind like ‘oh this is pretty short and I heard it was good’ messed me up bad.
(I am commenting at the beginning of the video, maybe it gets an honorable mention, idk)
